At this conference on Challenges and Prospects of State-Building in Post-Secession Sudan, organised by the Centre for African Studies at the London School of Oriental and African Studies, I offer a conceptual perspective on the dual challenges of peace-building and state-building in post-secession Sudan, focusing on the degree to which the two can be expected to succeed simultaneously.
